Welcome to the first Apple Core blog posting! We're trying to get to the core of education issues through collaboration and discussion between teachers and other education professionals.
The first issue to discuss is literacy. What is literacy? How would you define it? Does your definition of literacy change your instruction? Have you ever had a classroom experience that may have changed your definition of literacy or your practices in teaching it? Does literacy have a different definition at the different grade levels? And how do we know when we have achieved success? How do our students know?
I am currently taking a class called Content Area Literacy at UNLV. So far this semester we have been talking about technology in the lives of our students and how it effects literacy. It has been suggested that technology, as an ever more integral part of our lives, has changed the definition of literacy. What do you think? Please share your ideas. I'll keep you updated on class discussions.
